What Stump Grinding Involves

A grinder with a steel wheel and carbide teeth sweeps across the stump and takes it down in passes, typically six to twelve inches below grade — deeper if you are planting a new tree or pouring concrete there. Surface roots running out from the stump can be ground too. The wood comes out as chips, which we rake back into the hole, mound slightly to allow for settling, or haul away if you would rather bring in clean loam. When You Need a Stump Ground

Grind the stump when you want the lawn back and you are tired of mowing around it, when it has started sending up suckers around the base, when you are about to install a fence, a shed, a walkway, or a new planting bed in that spot, or when the decaying stump is drawing carpenter ants and termites close to a foundation. Why Stumps Do Not Just Rot Away

Hardwood stumps take a very long time to break down, and oak in particular can sit in a New England yard for fifteen or twenty years. The dense heartwood and the root mass below grade stay intact long after the top has weathered grey. Meanwhile, many species keep trying to live — Norway maple, black locust, and poplar all push new shoots from the stump and the roots, and those shoots come back every year until the stump is destroyed. Grinding ends it.

What Affects the Price

• Diameter at the ground. Stumps are usually priced by how wide they are, measured at the widest point of the flare.
• How deep you need it. Lawn depth is standard. Grinding deep enough to plant or pour costs more.
• Access. The grinder needs a path in. A narrow gate means a smaller machine and more time.
• Rocks and fill. Ledge, buried stone, and old fill dull the teeth and slow everything down. Common in older Weymouth yards.
• Chips. Leaving them is included. Hauling them off and bringing in loam is extra.
